Choosing Your site's Layout
The web was born of innovation, layout is an important part of this innovation , it is very critical to a website and should be organized and easy to use and look at specially that home page which is the front door for your online business, and should look and sound as if it was expecting customers then the other pages should follow the same rules.
Pay attention to :
The Company's Logo of your site is what stays in the memory of your visitors so place at the top or in the upper left-hand corner of each page, and make sure to link it to the home page . |
The navigation or what i call the brain of the site should be placed in a consistent location on every page, often at the top or on the left side of each page. |
Bottom of each page should include all major links and specially contact information links. |
Use well known terms and names for site tools and links , keep everything clear what is understood to one user may not be understood to the other , so standard and simple terms, like if you are going to use a search box, make it look like a search box, and add "search" on the button, don't use for example words like "get it!" or "look up " |
Stay away from :
Very wide pages, many users are still using monitors and resolutions that will require horizontal scrolling for pages wider than about 600 pixels. It's annoying to keep scrolling back and forth to view a page. it disrupts the users concentration in addition if a user desires to print, the page may not fit the width of his printer ..most users has standard size printers amd screen that are wider than 600 pixels will not print correctly. |
Long Pages , try as much as possible to keep your pages short like one screen scroll only ..sometimes it's envidable . Long pages are not bothersome as wide pages |
Large size page, 90% of users will wait for about ten seconds for a page to load . Pages should be no larger than 34K, including the HTML file and all graphics. |
Animation, flashy images and sounds, or other gimmicks should only be used if they serve the purpose of the site.
Frames In general, users find frames to be confusing. When bookmarking a page in a site using frames the home page of the site is the one that gets bookmarked and not that particular page. it's not usable to use the back button in navigating a frame site also it's not printer friendly nor search engine friendly. |
